Electricity produced from geothermal energy sources is generated without emissions of certain pollutants such as nitrogen oxide - and with far lower emissions of other pollutants such as carbon dioxide - unlike electricity produced by burning fossil fuels.
Electricity produced from geothermal energy sources therefore plays a far smaller role in local and regional incidences of acid rain and global warming, compared with energy produced by burning fossil fuels.
Geothermal energy is also an attractive alternative to other energy sources in a strategy to avoid dependence on any single energy source or politically sensitive supply sources.
Once drilling of geothermal wells is complete, the geothermal plant is not exposed to fuel price or fuel delivery risk.
